Introduction – The state of Health Education in the Public education system in Israel
Israel as relative new country with many different ethnic backgrounds has a public school and university system, in which the vast majority of students will undergo their studies, shaping them to the citizens of tomorrow. It is evident in recent years, that emphasis on health education and the importance of it has declined to almost non-existence in the country, influencing the society and it’s future citizens.
Due to recent changes in the 2000 century, mainly influenced by political clashes resulting primarily from within the country, the public school system doesn’t emphasize the importance of health, and there are currently no active classes or even seminars in public schools and high schools (excluding some universities and higher education institutes) that teach young children and high school children about basic topics that every growing to-be adult should know, like the importance of diet , exercise, and being abstinent from smoking. It is evident due to multiple researches in the last few years that the average school kid in the country usually disregards his diet completely. While some teenagers are indeed participating of various kinds of sports, most spend their time at home playing video games or consuming other passive media. According to multiple polls, the rise of tobacco use in teenagers is increasing every year, and starting in a younger age, resulting in possibly many adults that smoke. This of course, is relevant to which part of Israel the teenager grows up in – The more peripheral you are to the center and Tel Aviv area, the more likely you are to start smoking or even abuse drugs as a minor. This is due to the absolute discrepancy resulting from a system that is mainly Public and under-regulated from the ministry of education, that puts emphasis in other areas of education that are viewed by the majority as irrelevant, like religious studies.
Due to many miscalculations done by the ministry of education in Israel, the general public of students in high schools and schools are not educated in Health and lifestyle as to be excepted. unlike their peers in developed countries (Most of the countries in the EU, for instance) it creates a future of unhealthy adults that are likely to put a constraint on the , also public, health system. In order to prevent that , In my opinion it is wise to regulate the ministry of education itself by an outer committee, and thus maybe some day the students will be more knowledgeable about such an important topic like their health and lifestyle.
