I’ll describe Japan’s medical insurance and health education. With regard to health education, I will use the term health literacy to convey what kind of education the school side is providing to students with what in mind.

Japan’s medical insurance is universal insurance, and all citizens who have an address in Japan except for some beneficiaries and others, and Japanese foreigners who have a status of residence of more than one year are required to take out medical insurance.
The first health insurance system in Japan was first-in-a-class work in 1927, which was enacted in 1922 after World War I. This system, which began with the union of workers who took on dangerous businesses such as mining labor, gradually expanded the scope, and it was 1961 that universal national insurance was achieved by the development of the National Health Insurance System operated by municipalities.
Japan has achieved the world’s highest average life expectancy and insurance medical care level through the universal public insurance system.
The feature of the universal insurance system is that it secures the whole nation by public medical institutions, can freely choose medical institutions, and can receive advanced medical care at low medical expenses.
As for the burden of medical expenses, people aged 75 or over have 10%, 70 to 74 years have 20%, 6 to 69 years have 30%, and less than 6 years have 20%.
As for health education, I will describe health literacy that focuses mainly on four things which Japanese school students should know.
The first is about self-exploration ability. It fosters the ability to understand the structure of the body, its own development, the ability to notice changes in the body, and to understand the purpose of physical measurement and examination.
The second is lifestyle management ability. Arteriosclerosis, which is the cause of heart disease and stroke, which is the second and third leading cause of death in Japan, progresses over many years with no symptoms, as it is called silent killer, and its symptoms progress. It is necessary to understand how to prevent such lifestyle-related diseases.
The third is the skill for selecting information about health. It is intended to identify the credibility of the information source and to utilize the information well.
The fourth is the acquisition of social skills. Having good communication with people brings health to your heart. It is said that the balance between claims and listening is important.

Japan’s health care system is caring for the people, and as for health education, it is good to consider the mind health. As the concept of health literacy is clear, in school, teachers should teach more seriously and students should learn more seriously. I don’t think they now know the importance of health literacy correctly. It is necessary for each person to understand the importance of health education.
