Heath care education in my country:
World health organisation describes health education as “any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their health, by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes.”
This health education aspect includes mental health, physical health, psychological health, social health, sexual health and reproductive health. In today’s world health education also includes topics like issues of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and environmental health.
My country is India. It is a developing country with a population of 1.37 billion people. Health education in developing country like mine is an absolute necessity as it helps in increasing health literacy and lower the mortality rate arising due to various disease and health related problems.
Health education in my country is provided by trained professionals known as health educators, and also by non medical professional institutes and individuals. Trained professionals are certified specialists holding a certificate in public health or on specific health issue. The work force of public health education consists of doctors, paramedics and nursing staff. They are equipped with necessary resource to reach out to the people and educate them and increase awareness about various diseases. They are also educated people about lifestyle changes for prevention of various diseases.
Non medical professional institutes provide training in public health to students. These institutes help in strengthening the health care and health education system as they form a network between government and the people by training a competent and motivated health force.
There is also a school health program also in my country that trains school teachers to address the needs health needs to school children and increase awareness about hygiene and communicable diseases among them.
Currently my country, India is faced with triple burden of diseases- the existing communicable diseases, the emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases and the ever increasing non communicable lifestyle related diseases. So health education is diverse and growing field of public health with multiple challenges in my country.
In my country different methods are used for health education as the population is large, there is diversity and educational level of people is different. Techniques or ways are used in which series of activities are carried out to communicate ideas, information and develops necessary skills and attitude. Three main methods are used mainly-Individual method, Group method and Mass method.
Individual method: This involves one to one communication with the person by a health professional. This happens mainly when the person himself approaches the health professional for some reason e.g. patient visiting a doctors clinic. This method is very effective in knowing the knowledge, aptitude and practise of the person. Disadvantage is that in my country the population in very large impact created by this method is negligible.
Group method: this method may include group discussion, demonstration, mini-lecture, problem solving, brain storming, panel discussion, role play, field trips, educational tours, workshops, seminars, road shows etc. groups may be small of five to ten people or large. It is a cost effective and useful method for different category of individuals. Limited materials and objects are required. Disadvantage is that all people may not participate and is not practical with people more than twenty.
Mass method: This method is generally used by government to increase health education and awareness by means of various National programs designed for specific disease prevention or awareness. My country has number of national programs e.g. National program for prevention of blindness, National program for Tuberculosis prevention, National program for immunisation of children etc. These programs involve specific government health officials at various levels. Advertisements are used in media e.g. television, radio, bill boards etc. Various door to door survey and awareness camps are done. A special drive given to polio eradication program helped in eradication of polio from our country. This method has a huge impact but is not cost effective. It involves proper planning and implementation by the government. Networking between various charities and government is sometimes required to create a greater impact.
Health education in my country is a diverse and an ongoing topic, with various permutations and combinations being used.
